The finale of The Only Mortal in Heaven begins with a choice. Angel hesitates, then surrenders. 'If this is what it takes.' Asmodea has always wondered how an angel tastes, and she draws Angel close before both of them turn their attention to William. Red fire and blue light coil together over his chest as the rite finally takes hold. For William, this is paradise at last, an angel kissing him and refusing to stop.

When the glow fades, he opens his eyes in his own room, in his own bed, sunlight spilling through his own window. On either side of him, two familiar faces are sleeping soundly. No wings. No horns.
